The veteran newsreader Carol Barnes has died in hospital with her family around her.
Miss Barnes, 63, suffered a massive stroke and collapsed at her home last Sunday. She never regained consciousness and doctors at the Royal Sussex County hospital had feared the worst.
In 1973, Carol started work as a scriptwriter for London’s Independent Radio news until she was offered to fill in after a newsreader had failed to turn up for work. Two years later she started at ITN as a full time broadcast journalist. It was the start of a hugely successful career lasting more than 20 years.
The household name decided to scale down her work load after the death of her daughter in a sky-diving accident and in latter years she has been working as a columnist on various magazines and she was also co-running a media-training company.
It was only this January that Ms Barnes presented a documentary called “Saving Ed Mitchell”, about her former ITN colleague, in which she appeared in good health. The documentary set out to discover how the life of Mr Mitchell had collapsed into alcoholism and homelessness.
In a tribute to his mother, her son James described her as a beautiful, kind and delicate person.
