It was reported today that Dame Maggie Smith has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The double-Oscar winning actress has apparently had a tumour removed and has completed a course of chemotherapy and was described by friends as “typically brave and understated. The last thing she wants to do is make a fuss about it.”
The 73 year old actress, who is more recently known for her part in the Harry Potter films as the schoolmistress ‘Minerva McGonagall’ carried on the role while undergoing radiotherapy treatment and is continuing on her new role in the film ‘From Time to Time, which has been delayed to give her a chance to recover.
Dame Maggie’s career spans over 50 years, receiving her first Oscar in 1969 for her role as the schoolmistress in ‘The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie’. She has since gone on to be awarded two further Oscar’s, 5 Bafta’s and a Golden Globe amongst others.
