David Walliams Completes Swim To Africa

Joy Ryder - Saturday 08.03.08, 08:56am

walliamsLittle Britain star David Walliams,Olympic rower, James Cracknell and a friend Greg Whyte have completed their “swim to Africa” to raise money for BBC’s Sport Relief.

Their journey through the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain to Morocco took them just four-and-a-half hours in what was called an eventful crossing as David suffered sickness whilst swimming but carried on.

The trio were cheered on by James’s wife, Beverley Turner, the TV presenter and Dragon’s Den star Theo Paphitis, who sailed alongside the boys cheering them on.

Before the swim took place, Jame’s, 35, rowed across the channel and cycled for up to 1,395 miles to the starting point of the swim. Two years ago, David swam across the English Channel raising £1 million for Sport Relief but never had to keep his eye out for killer whales on that crossing.

This was the final part of Cracknell’s Cross-Continent Challenge which has taken 10 days with all the money raised going to Sport Relief. James started his adventure from Dover on 27th February when he rowed across the English Channel in just over six hours but with horrendous weather conditions. He then cycled the 1,400 miles from Northern France to Southern Spain. He reached Tarifa in only eight days then had a day off before the swim.
