The Liberal Democratic MP Lembit Opik, is getting married after proposing to his girlfriend Gabriela Irimia last week at the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
Miss Irimia, is one half of the pop-singing Cheeky Girls who arrived in Britain in 2002 with her twin sister Monica. Their first single ‘The Cheeky Song’ (Touch my bum) reached number two in the charts.
The couple met at a TV talent show two years ago when the girls were contestants at the event and the pair intend to marry either next year or the year after.
Mr Opik was previously engaged to ITV weather girl Sian Lloyd, until their relationship ended in 2006. Ms Lloyd has recently married the motorsport millionaire Jonathan Ashman, and claimed that her relationship with Mr Opik had problems due to his heavy drinking and his tightness with money.
Miss Irimia, 25-years-old, said in an interview with Hello, that she wants a “lavish white wedding in a castle”. Talking of the engagement she said “We’d gone to the Trevi Fountain that afternoon and each made a wish we kept a secret. After a romantic dinner in the evening, Lembit got a taxi to take us back to the fountain, saying he wanted me to see it lit up. There he started talking about our future together, took a gorgeous little box from his pocket, got down on one knee and made his proposal. When I said ‘yes’ he started to cry. Tears of joy poured out of his eyes. I couldn’t cry, I was so happy that I just kept smiling and laughing”. Since the engagement, Miss Irimai has been seen wearing a Tiffany white platinum diamond ring.
Mr Opik added ” We were euphoric afterwards, walking around the city and sipping champagne and chatting away in our hotel suite until the early hour. I couldn’t ask for things to go better than they did.”
