It has been announced that Nelson Mandela will not be attending the opening match of the World Cup today after learning of the death of his great-granddaughter.
The 91-year-old former South Africa president, was told of the sad news that 13-year-old Zenani Mandela had been killed in a car crash last night on her way home from a concert in Soweto to celebrate the opening tournament of the football World Cup.
It is believed that the driver of the car in which Zenani was travelling has been arrested and charged with drink-driving and could also face charges of culpable homicide.
Zenani celebrated her ninth birthday on the 9th June and was one of nine great-grandchildren and the family have asked for privacy as they mourn the tragedy.
