Pop Stars Eliza Doolittle & Jay McGuiness win Sexiest Vegetarians Award

Terry Lane - Tuesday 28.06.11, 11:11am

What do Skinny Genes singer Eliza Doolittle and The Wanted heartthrob Jay McGuiness have in common?

In addition to having heaps of talent, they’re dedicated to a compassionate, vegetarian lifestyle – and it’s that dedication that has netted them each the title of PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarians.

Thousands of votes were cast in this year’s poll on PETA.org.uk to help PETA choose the winners, who faced stiff competition from 99 other finalists, including Leona Lewis, Joss Stone, Russell Brand, Sir Paul McCartney, Joaquin Phoenix, Natalie Portman and Chantelle Houghton.

Eliza Doolittle is a lifelong vegetarian, thanks to her mother, Tony award-winning Les Miserables star Frances Ruffelle. She’s been known to sing the praises of her vegetarian diet in interviews, saying of one trip to Jamaica to film a music video, “Oh my God, the food was amazing! I’m vegetarian so I didn’t have any jerk chicken or anything, but I did have some bean soup … it was so yummy!” Some of her favourite dishes include nut loaf, veggie pitas from Nando’s and vegetarian sushi.

Jay McGuiness has also loved animals from an early age. In an interview, his mother described his childhood habit of ignoring his family’s football matches in favour of “talking to … the ladybirds. … He loved animals”. He shares his home with his lizard, Neytiri, and says that if he were ever to advertise a product, it would have to be “Quorn, the fake meat. I’m a veggie and I eat it a lot”.

Previous winners include Leona Lewis, Anthony Kiedis and Fiona Phillips.

To see the complete list of vegetarian celebrities who were in the running in this year’s contest, go to PETA.org.uk.

Looking Good – hair products for your summer break

Annie Payne - Friday 10.06.11, 11:28am

Whatever your choice of hairstyle, it’s all about hair control!

It’s all well and good getting ready for a night out in the comfort of your own home but what perils await you and your hair if you are going away for a summer break?  It’s one thing styling your hair before you go out to a party or for dinner date but quite another if you plan to spend the day out in the sun or on the beach.

There are plenty of hair gels, wax, foam and sprays to control hair for all occasions; whether you are looking for elegant style and panache or as is the case with many celebrities, something to make your hair look wild, messy, untamed or damn right scruffy.

Feeling good about your hair whether mimicking a Hollywood A-list celebrity at the Oscars or a surfer just washed up on the shore, it’s all about control and style, and the confidence that gives you.  So here are three products worth packing in your summer holiday bags if you want to avoid bad hair days.

Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray

Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray

Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray is an excellent way to add volume and texture while controlling wavy hair for a visit to the beach this summer.

Ingredients include seaweed and kelp extracts to give your hair a natural-looking, salty, sundried look.  Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray is used by among others, Jade Jagger who is quoted as saying she wears the product in London when not at home in Ibiza.

Another valuable product for summer hair care is Bumble & Bumble Sumotech Tonic.

This product is great for the scalp and hair roots. Its low pH (lower than water) lubricates and detangles hair and smoothes the hair cuticle replenishing dried hair with a natural-looking shine.

Sumotech Tonic is perfect if you have used styling creme through the day and come the evening, you want to revitalise and freshen up your hair for an evening meal or cocktails.

Another ‘must-have’ is Bumble & Bumble Does It All – a spray that helps hair respond to heat tools while protecting it.  It helps with back-combing, pinning up or curling your hair by giving the hair volume with subtle degrees of control and natural movement. Fashion icon Stephanie Seymour uses ‘Does It All’.

Whatever your choice of hair products, don’t be going on summer holiday unprepared.  One bad hair day can spoil your chance to impress.

Comic-book Heroes to the Rescue

Terry Lane - Wednesday 08.06.11, 11:19am

The Green Hornet, Captain America and the latest instalment of The X-Men are coming to a cinema near you.

Seth Rogen stars in The Green Hornet as the latest comic-book superhero to be made into a big budget Hollywood blockbuster.  Rogen is a talented actor, comedian and writer who started life as a stand-up comedian but more recently has starred in films such as Superbad (2007), Knocked Up (2007) and Pineapple Express (2008).

James McAvoy stars in the latest X-Men instalment, X-Men: First Class.  McAvoy plays a young Charles Xavier; the role played by a wheelchair bound Patrick Stewart in the previous films.  Though McAvoy is better well known than Seth Rogen, this starring role in a Hollywood blockbuster may well turn him into an A-list actor.  His previous films include The Chronicles of Narnia (2005), Last King of Scotland (2006), Atonement (2007) and Wanted (2008).

Next month sees the third comic-book hero film to be released in UK cinemas in the space of six weeks when Chris Evans (not the annoying ginger-headed DJ & TV presenter) stars in Captain America: the First Avenger.  But unlike the James McAvoy and Seth Rogen, Chris Evans has already starred in the previous two Fantastic Four films – Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).  He also starred in the sci-fi film, Sunshine (2007).

Not only will James McAvoy and Seth Rogen be the talk of the town and appear on every TV couch going to promote their respective films in the next few weeks but their previous films will receive a higher demand too.  If like me, when I see a great performance from an actor you want to watch other previously released films, then it has never been easier to rent DVD’s or watch films online.

Online rental companies have made it even easier to rent DVD’s from the comfort of your home.  With a library of 6,000 titles to choose from including a wide range of categories including action/adventure, animation, comedy, drama, horror, sport, television, music and a selection of films for children or the whole family, you will be able to watch other films starring this summer’s superheroes.

Some online rental companies, such as LoveFilm now offer an additional service allowing you to stream videos via your computer or television.  No need to return rental DVD’s through the post anymore.  Just sign-up for a monthly account that includes the online service and chose a film to watch.  Simple.

Danielle Lineker campaigns against battery cages for farmed rabbits

Annie Payne - Thursday 02.06.11, 08:36am

Actress and model Danielle Lineker spearheads Four Paws campaign to ban battery farming cages for farmed rabbits in the UK.

Up to 1 million rabbits are often confined in tiny cages before being slaughtered.

Danielle Lineker is spearheading a Four Paws animal charity campaign to ban battery cages for farmed rabbits in the UK.

Many people in Britain are completely unaware that so many rabbits are suffering in terrible conditions before they end up in a pet food tin or on a dinner plate. Farmed rabbits are being kept in barren cages in similar conditions to factory farmed battery hens. Hundreds of rabbits may be housed in rows of tiny wire cages in windowless sheds. They have little room to move, no daylight and usually nothing to chew or gnaw on except the bars of the cage.

The boredom and stress can lead to the development of abnormal repetitive behaviours and the wire flooring can cause painful sores on the rabbits’ feet. This is the everyday life for some rabbits kept in battery cages across Britain. Barren cages for hens will be illegal from 2012 but there are currently no such plans to end their use for rabbits.

A Four Paws investigation has exposed the hidden truth behind farmed rabbit battery cages in the UK. Investigators visited several UK farms and were shocked by what they found – cramped, dark, inadequate housing systems where animals are kept hidden away.

It’s estimated that between 250 000 and one million rabbits are reared for meat in the UK each year. However, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) does not publish any statistics on rabbit farming, and there is no commercial body representing the UK rabbit farming industry, so accurate data is currently not available.

Danielle Lineker and Four Paws are calling on the Government to phase out the keeping of farmed rabbits in cages and to lift the veil of secrecy that surrounds the UK rabbit farming industry. Four Paws wants key statistics and information made publicly available. Four Paws is very concerned that rabbit factory farming is continuing to grow in the UK.

Actress and model Danielle Lineker says:

“Let’s do all we can to help these beautiful and intelligent animals by supporting a campaign that helps to protect them from suffering. It’s appalling that some rabbits can be imprisoned in these barren wire cages that fail to meet even their most basic welfare needs. Rabbits need freedom of movement and opportunities to express natural behaviours such as foraging for food and digging in the earth. Rabbits are popular companion animals and most people would be horrified to learn that these gentle creatures can be kept in these conditions. I support a call to ban all battery cages for UK farmed rabbits.”

Angelique Davies, Head of Programs at Four Paws, said:

“Many people would be shocked to learn that rabbits can legally be kept in tiny barren cages that severely restrict their movement and natural behaviour. Legal protection for farmed rabbits is woefully inadequate. British people feel strongly about animal welfare and we believe the majority of people would agree that keeping rabbits in cramped barren cages can no longer be tolerated. We must join together in calling on the Government to end the keeping of farmed rabbits in cages.”
