Today, attorney’s started questioning 150 potential jurors for the child pornography trial surrounding one of urban music’s biggest stars, R Kelly.
The 16 chosen jurors, four of them alternates, will be key for both prosecutors and defence attorneys to hear the case of the 41-year-old, who has already pleaded not guilty to charges that he videotaped himself having sex with a girl as young as 13.
It is set to be a daunting challenge for the prosecutors, as the girl believed to be in the videotape is now 23, and says it wasn’t her and Kelly’s lawyers haven’t conceded it’s Kelly in the video.
It is claimed that the video was made between January 1, 1998, and November 1, 2000, and that the girl on film was born in September 1984.
When the videotape first appeared on June 5, 2002, Kelly was indicted on pornography charges. If the jurors find him guilty, he could be facing 15 years in jail.
The first day of the trial began on Friday and the Cook County Circuit Judge Vincent Gaughan said to the potential jurors “As you know, this is a high-profile case, and if you don’t know, God love you. You’re probably the only person on earth that doesn’t.”
The judge denied a defense motion to postpone the trial, which has already been delayed for six years, suggesting that the jury selection could weed out any tainted jurors.
The selection of the jurors is expected to take about a week, although the trial itself could take several weeks.
R.Kelly is best known for “I Believe I Can Fly” for which he won a Grammy in 1997 and more recently ‘Ignition’ and his current single ‘Hair Braider’.
